GRID-Arendal's Environmental Crime Programme has selected the winners of the investigative environmental journalism grant announced in May 2019. Two journalists have each been awarded US$3,000 to conduct investigations on issues related to environmental crime, specifically illegal logging and illegal fishing. The grants are offered as a contribution to the fight against environmental crime by supporting investigative journalists with a specific interest in this topic.

Environmental crime is a threat to sustainable development, especially the environment, security and the global economy. It is the fourth largest area of organised crime in the world with a 6% annual growth, and is also one of the hardest to tackle. There is a pressing need to put environmental crime in the spotlight of international attention, and this is where investigative journalism can make a difference.

Chris Lett, an Emmy-nominated producer from the United States, experienced editor, freelance reporter and investigative journalist currently focusing on environmental crime issues in Africa. He will be investigating illegal fishing and how it negatively affects communities depending on fishing for their livelihood.

Eduardo Franco Berton from Bolivia is an investigative photojournalist with experience reporting on wildlife crime, exploitation and conservation, among other environmental issues in Latin America. He is also the founder of www.raibolivia.org. Eduardo will be investigating illegal logging in national parks in the Bolivian Amazon, and its links to organised crime in the region.

Valentin Emelin, the leader of the Environmental Crime Programme, says:

“We believe the two experienced journalists will produce important stories with clear positive impact on people and the environment based on sound investigative work. The winners’ participation in this programme will give also them valuable experiences for their future work.”
