To celebrate this year’s theme of International Mountain Day, “Restoring mountain ecosystems", we would like to invite you on a tour to the mountain villages of Longpa and Nobgang with young local farmer Namgay in the breath-taking backdrop of Bhutan's Haa Valley.
The farmers in the Haa Valley come from a pastoral tradition and transitioned to agriculture with the support of the Bhutanese government less than 20 years ago. The StoryMap “Growing Resilience in Bhutan,” is produced by GRID-Arendal in partnership with the International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD), and underscores the critical role mountain farmers and pastoralists play in ecosystem management.
During the agricultural tour, you will see how the mountain villages have adapted and practice organic methods that are still quite new to them, with the potential to increase their resilience while keeping the mountain ecosystem they depend on in balance. Their role is an example of ICIMOD's initiatives promoting climate-resilient agricultural technologies and practices, and in empowering a new generation of mountain farmers.
In early 2024, we will also be releasing a documentary of the same name, sharing the daily lives and inner thoughts of other members of the Longpa and Nobgang communities.
“Growing Resilience in Bhutan” aims to draw global attention to the important role of the mountain communities that safeguard the vital mountain ecosystems they reside in for the health of our planet.
Happy International Mountain Day!
Earlier this year, we published with ICIMOD a book “Resilient Mountain Solutions -Ten local solutions for global impact” where we present some of the solutions that are now in use in Longpa and Nobgang. You can also visit the Resilient Mountain Solutions website for summaries of these solutions.
